A "hardening agent" is that one (or more) ingredient you use in your recipe to make your lotion bars and lip products solid.

Remember to always adjust your formulas if switching from Beeswax to a vegan recipe. The higher the melting point the less you need to add.

Ucuuba and Japanese Wax are not hard enough to be the only hardening agents for lotion bars and tube lip products, but they work just fine for balms, salves and scrubs.

Beeswax
Non-vegan, comes from bees (of course), has a melting point of 62 to 64 ºC (144 to 147 ºF)

Carnauba Wax
Vegan, comes from the leaves of a Brazilian palm tree.
melting point of  82
 ºC (179 ºF)

Candelilla Wax
Vegan, made from a Mexican shrub.
Melting point of
67 ºC (152 ºF)

Japanese Wax (Sumac Wax)
Vegan, made from berries native to Japan and China.
Melting point of 51
 ºC (124 ºF)

Ucuuba Butter
Vegan, comes from the seeds of a tree in the Amazon.
Melting point of 53
 ºC - 127 ºF

So far I have worked with Ucuuba, Beeswax, Candelilla and Carnauba, I added Japanese wax to this list because Lush uses it and people got curious, I honestly don't see the point, it is not hard enough and doesn't have enough amazing properties, to work with it I would rather use Ucuuba despite the color and scent.

I tried working with candelilla but I feel it gives the final product a flaky texture, like your lip gloss has a million super tiny grains of sand.
Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone experienced it?

I love carnauba but it is hard to work with such a hard wax.

Candelilla is usually more expensive than beeswax and less than carnauba.

Bottom line: If I am making a slave I stick with ucuuba, for lip products beeswax.
